Located in the department of Rocha, Uruguay, The Rocha Lagoon is an extensive shallow
water mirror separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a thin cord of sand.
It has an area of 72 km². It was formed as a result of the rise in sea level during the last 6000
to 8000 years. It has an average depth of 0.6 meters, and its maximum depth is 1.4 meters.
When strong ocean waves or sand dunes move, the separation between the lagoon and the
ocean periodically disappears. Then, fresh water mixes with salt water from the Atlantic
Ocean changing the levels of salt concentration in the lagoon, and influencing biological
conditions and physical-chemical parameters giving the lagoon an enormous biological
diversity.
The lagoon is known for its richness and abundance of fish, crabs, shrimp, and mollusks.
Many birds such as the black-necked swan and the coscoroba swan find abundant food
sources in the lagoon. It is part of the hemispheric network of reserves for shorebirds as a
site of regional category.
As a total ecosystem, human presence does not exceed the scale of a very small lineal
village with families whose main activity is artisanal fishing in small boats.
Like many of the lagoons that are located to the southeast and east of the Uruguayan coast,
it has the status of a biosphere reserve. It was declared a "national lake park" in 1977. The
area of the Rocha Lagoon entered the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) in 2010
under the category Protected Landscape after a long consultation process.
